Getting to Know You

This is an interactive activity so that we can get to know each other.

Part 1: Make an Important List. Respond to this post, by listing the name of someone           important to you (not a family member), a year that was important for you, and an object that is important for you.

For example, here is my important list:
1.) name: Kathy
2.) year: 1999
3.) object: the mountains

Part 2: As you read the lists of your classmates, ask questions about their Important Lists. Try to guess who the name belongs to. Try to guess why the year is important to your classmate. Try to guess what significance the object has for your classmate.

For example:
1.) name: Is Kathy your friend?
2.) year: Is 1999 the year you were born?
3.) object: Do you like hiking in the mountains?

Part 3: Answer your classmates questions. You can also ask a related question.

For example:
1.) name: Yes, she is my friend, but I have many friends. Can you guess why she is especially important to me?
2.) year: No, I was not born in 1999. Guess again.
3.) object: Yes, I like hiking in the mountains. I live in a place with lots of mountains. Do you like hiking?

Part 4: Continue to ask your classmate follow-up questions until you are able to understand why the name, year, and object your classmates have listed on their Important Lists are important to them. Or if they have asked you any questions, answer their questions.

For example:
1.) name: Is Kathy your oldest friend?
2.) year: Did you start school in 1999?
3.) object: Yes, I like hiking too!

Part 5: By the way, don't forget to ask me follow-up questions about my important person, Kathy; my important year, 1999; and my important object, the mountains.

Have fun getting to know each other!
